Occupational Transmission of HIV Unlikely
David Crowe
letter to Globe and Mail Newspaper
November 9th 2000
R.D. Newman’s confusion and concern over being the good samaritan when bodily fluids are evident is understandable, but misplaced (re: Globe and Mail, Nov. 8, A22). We continually hear that AIDS is an infectious disease, but much less often are informed that a tremendous amount of science does not support this view.
In the United States, out of over 700,000 total AIDS cases, not a single case has been in a paramedic or surgeon (source: CDC Surveillance report for year ending December 31, 1999). Now, it’s true that these people coat themselves in latex, but they also work in situations where the likelihood of a tear is significant, due to surgical instruments, jagged pieces of metal in a wrecked car, etc. It is known that there are millions of needle-stick injuries alone, every year.
Out of a total of almost 17,000 AIDS cases ever reported in Canada, only three have been blamed on occupational exposure, and this is due to an inability to find another risk for these people, not on positive evidence of occupational transmission.
The facts are that, for healthy people aiding sick people, whether professionals or good samaritans, AIDS just does not behave like an infectious disease.
